Hybrid Clematis

These flamboyant floosies of the Clematis family are highly desirable beauties that are very hard to resist. Once you've grown one successfully it is very hard to resist planting another and another and another.......... Hybrid Clematis are so called as they are deliberate crosses between several species of Clematis, mostly C. lanuginosa from China and C.patens from Japan. Much of this hybridization work was done in the 19th century in England and France. They are often described as Early Large Flowered - *Group 2 or Late Large Flowered - *Group 3.

The colour range includes white, pink, red, blue and purple. The flowers which open from attractive fat buds can be single, semi-double or double. With semi-double and double cultivars the second flush of flowers is sometimes single. The flowers are followed by silky seed heads that hold on the plant for some time. Hybrid Clematis are not as vigorous as their 'montana' cousins and are ideal for dripping through deciduous trees and shrubs, they combine particularly well with roses. They can also be container grown as long as the roots are kept cool.
